Cousins
by Jean "Sis" Dougherty
March 29, 1987

Jana was her given name,
But we called her "Tutti" or "Jan".
We all grew up together
As cousins, playmates, friends.

We have the childhood memories
Of those Sunday afternoons
When we played and laughed together
In one another's homes.

Having a large family
Was a gift that was implanted,
And by the time we left those homes
We took relatives for granted.

We once had many aunts and uncles;
There remain now just a few.
Each time we lose a loved one
A part of us dies, too.

Large families are a blessing
That I'm very grateful for,
But as that circle narrows
Those bonds mean even more.

We ask ourselves, Why, Lord?
Our cousins were too young!
First Sally, then Rel, now Jan.
Could their missions here be done?

We will never understand it,
But, yet, we all still try.
Could it be we're too complacent?
Should we analyze our lives?

I've made a vow I'll try to keep
For my cousins who are gone.
I'll live each day as if my last,
And appreciate each dawn.

We take life and family for granted,
But there are no guarantees
That we will have tomorrow.
What will be, will be.
