Jabez was the son of James Watkins & Barbara M. Sprankle.

He was born in Mahoning Twp. (now N. Mahoning Twp.), Indiana Co., PA.

He married: (1) Maria Miller and (2) Elizabeth Josephine Miller, 10 Nov 1909, Brooklyn, NY.

An informative biography on the life of Jabez B. Watkins appears in a 1912 history of Kansas and can be found here:

Jabez B. Watkins was responsible for the growth and settlement of Southwest Louisiana and specifically, of the town, Lake Charles. A wonderful write-up on the history of Southwest Louisiana and the role that J. B. Watkins played in its development can be found here:

Jabez had no children with his wife, Elizabeth Josephine Miller, but he did have a son with Maria Miller named Miller J. Watkins, who was born in 1869 in Jefferson Co., PA. Maria is enumerated as "Mariah Watkins" in the 1870 census with her son, Miller, age 1 (Jabez is not enumerated in the household; he was a law student at the University of Illinois). By the time of the 1880 census, Maria was remarried to Daniel F. Harrison and they had two children - and Miller, age 11, is living with them.
