After earning a degree in industrial engineering at the University of San Carlos, he was involved in both the business and government world. In 2003, he ran in the 2003 presidential election under the banner of the UNE (Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza) party and came in second in voting that year. Four years later, he ran again and was successful in the 2007 presidential election. He became the first left-wing president in 53 years. He went on to serve four years before stepping down in 2012. During his tenure, he expanded social programs and made other political reforms. In February of 2018, he, along with other members of his administration, was arrested on corruption charges but was released later that year.
