Following graduation from Bucknell, he enlisted in the Army in June 1942. There he received boot training and soon thereafter received his commission as an ensign in the Navy, where he served on two battleships as a decoder, last being the South Dakota on Guadalcanal.
Following his discharge in January 1946, he worked at the IRS in Cleveland and eventually returned to work with his father and brother in the family business, Newman's Men's Apparel, Danville, until he opened his own store in Sunbury in 1962. He was a Sunbury businessman for more than 30 years.
Bob was a member of the Central Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Sunbury Merchants Council. He was past president of the Danville Kiwanis Club; past exalted ruler of the Danville Elks Lodge 754; a member of Masonic Danville-Mahoning Lodge 224; Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Lodge Council Chapter Consistory, Williamsport; the Shamokin Dam Fire Company; and a life member of the Americus Fire Company, Sunbury. He was a member of Temple Beth El.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three sisters, Dorothy and Margaret, both of Baltimore, and Ester of Annapolis, MD; nephews; nieces; great-nephews; great-nieces; and one great-great-nephew. He was preceded in death by one brother, Philip, and three sisters, Miriam, Zelda and Ada.
Burial will be in Orthodox Jewish Cemetery, Danville.
