Vern and Mabel were parents of three sons, Don, Dale and Dennis. Mabel was widowed in 1955; sons Dale and Dennis and stepson Paul later died in separate motor vehicle accidents. While raising her family, Mabel worked in several retail stores and assisted her husband in a service station/appliance business in Terry. After Vern's death she was employed in the Prairie County Treasurer's Office, later serving as county treasurer. After her family was grown, she worked summers for Haynes Photo Shop in Yellowstone Park, then moved to Tempe, Ariz., where she worked in food services in a Tempe school. She retired in 1984 and moved to Helena to be near her son and daughter-in-law, Don and Margaret.
Mabel was active in the Helena Evangelical Covenant Church and participated in Dorcas Circle women's group. A skilled seamstress, she made several hundred jacket and cap layettes that were sent to a mission hospital in Zaire to present to expectant and new mothers to encourage them to receive medical care, as well as many quilts given to Birthright and other organizations, as well as family and friends. Until her final days, Mabel was an avid reader and was always surrounded by yarn, crochet hooks and beautiful crocheted items, finished and in-progress, made for friends, family and charitable organizations.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her sister Helen, brother Ross, sons Dale and Dennis, and stepsons Paul and Walter. She is survived by her son Donald (Margaret), brother Ralph (Irene) Dickson of Sequoia, Calif., nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren and her "adopted granddaughter" and dear friend, Darlene Chamberlin.
Interment will be in Terry.
