Amelia was the daughter of James Albert and Elizabeth (Leggett) Hightower. She married first Tarpley T.P. Holt on 26 Jan 1830 in Thomaston. Tarpley and Amelia had two daughters, Nancy and Caroline. Following Tarpley's death in 1854 she married second James Montgomery Calhoun a very successful lawyer in Atlanta who became Mayor of Atlanta during the Civil War.
Amelia returned to Thomaston after her second husband died in 1875.
