Elsie Louise (Franek) Carlson was born June 17, 1927 at Chamberlain, SD to William and Hazel (Huckins) Franek. She grew up on the farm her grandparents homesteaded near Gann Valley, SD and attended school in Gann Valley. She spoke of how her family worked and played together. One memory of this time was gathering together as a family on the porch at the end of the day where they talked, the grandparents told of the "old" country and they sang songs. Her father loved to hear the children sing. Elsie graduated from Gann Valley High School in 1945.

After graduation, Elsie had a hard time convincing her father to sign papers for her to join the Cadet Nurse Program as he already had three sons away at war. Elsie had always wanted to be a nurse and finally convinced her father to allow her to go to nursing school. She began nursing school at the Methodist State School of Nursing in Mitchell, SD in August of 1945 and graduated in 1948 after the end of the world war, which was a relief to her parents. While at school in Mitchell, Elsie met William (Bill) Carlson. They dated throughout her nurses training. On August 22, 1948 Elsie graduated from nurses training, on August 23, 1948 they were married.

Elsie and Bill lived in Mitchell, SD for all but a few months of their lives. She worked at Methodist Hospital in Mitchell as well as at different medical clinics. The hospital was where Elsie really loved to work and after working at a couple of clinics, she returned to work at the hospital. Elsie worked in all the departments of the hospital, as nurse or charge nurse who supervised other staff. She spoke of nights working as the charge nurse for the facility with several students working under her direction, learning compassionate care. The last several years at the hospital, Elsie was the Director of Materials Management. She supervised all purchase and supply, as well as equipment policy, set up and sterilization for surgery. Elsie felt the work was important, but said she did miss hands on nursing care.

Elsie chose an early retirement as both her mother and Bill's mother were failing in health and needed care. Elsie moved both mothers into her home and cared for them through their last years. She also enjoyed traveling with Bill, working in her garden and sewing.

Elsie was an active member of the United Methodist Church. She was a quilting club lady, they made quilts which they gave to the girls at the Abbot House. They also produced quilts to sell raising money for mission projects and repair of the stained-glass windows of the church. Elsie really enjoyed the quilting ladies and the work that they did.

Elsie was very family oriented and enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was the best mom a kid could have. She felt it was important for kids to have pets and so we always had a dog or fish or something. Not only did Elsie lovingly raise her own six children, she took in various nieces and nephews to care for at times. She took in grandchildren and other people's children, anyone who needed a mother and a place to stay.

Elsie was devastated by the passing of her grandchild Stephany in 1995 and grieved by the death of her daughter Sheryl in 2015. At the passing of the love of her life, William on August 24, 2018 one day after their 70th anniversary, Elsie felt she was ready to go home. Elsie was ready and waiting when she heard her Savior's call on October 26, 2022 and gladly went to join her family in Heaven.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, William Wagner son-in-law, Denise (Del) Fluth, William (Bonita) Carlson, Cleve (Jody) Carlson, Steve (Sandy) Carlson, Charles (Judy) Carlson; grandchildren, Lynelle, Carrie, Michelle, Amy (Shawn), Jennifer (Quincy), Will (Trish), Brianna (Dusty), CJ (Kelsey), Cole (Autumn); great grandchildren Meagan (James), Michael, Sammy (Noe), Austin, Kylee, Katy, Preston (Javan), Kaylee, Morgan, Connor, Danni (Logan), Kenna (Dean), Marian, Katherine, Zoey, Kassidy, Cooper, Alex, Ezra, Rosie and Noah; great great grandchildren Emma, Sean, Sophie, Theodore, Scarlett and River; a sister-in-law, Delphia Franek, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Elsie was preceded in death by her husband William (Bill) Carlson, daughter Sheryl Wagner, granddaughter Stephany Carlson, her parents William and Hazel (Huckins) Franek, and her siblings Anna (Lloyd) Pickner, John (Eleanor) Franek, Robert (Myra) Franek, Minnie (Horace) Ripley, Frank Franek, Edward Franek, Wilma (LeRoy) Bely, Connie (Eugene) Hamilton: and a sister-in-law, Darlene (Vernon) Hvam.
