Born Adalberto Pena, he was signed as an amateur free agent by the Houston Astros in 1977. He made his Major League debut as a late-season call-up on September 14, 1981, and would go on to serve as a backup utility player for veterans Phil Garner and Dickie Thon, and Denny Walling. In 1986, Pena contributed to the Astros' capturing of the 1986 Western Division Title. In 88 career regular-season games, he compiled 3 hits with a .203 lifetime batting average. He died from esophageal cancer.
