Elijah established his Davis Road estate in 1846, on the land that is now Emerson Gardens in Brookline. It included the house and carriage barn, built for 2nd wife Tirzah Strong Snell-Emerson and their daughter Tirzah Snell Emerson-Arnold, as well as for Elijah's first daughter Sarah, from his first wife Mima.
(Sarah was 11 when Tirzah & Elijah married, and Sarah lived with her father and step mother and half sister for another 20 years before marrying George Davis at age 32. Sarah and husband George continued to live close to her to her family until her death).

Elijah & Tirzah's estate was expanded to include a cottage and a substantial pond with a boathouse.
Towards the end of his life, Emerson desired to make more money in retirement, and sold building lots from his estate to friends, retaining some for himself and ten of those lots surrounding his estate were developed as rental properties in fashionable Victorian-era styles.

Upon Elijah's death in 1888, the estate went to his widow Tirzah and both daughters.
When Tirzah died in 1903 the daughters sold the remaining 2 acres of land of the estate, to the Town of Brookline, who wanted to build a public park on the land. The town paid to have the Emerson house and carriage house moved from it's original location at #81 Davis Ave, across Davis Avenue to #74 Davis Ave., and Elijah and Tirzah's granddaughter Mrs. Cullen B. Snell and her husband moved into the relocated house.
