Olympic Champion. He was a Lithuanian sprint canoeist that competed at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich in which he won the gold medal for the event. Besides the Olympics, he also competed in the World Championships in 1973, 1974, and 1975 where he won 1 gold in 1973 and 1975 and 2 gold in 1974. He also won a silver in 1973 and a bronze in 1971. He also defected to Duisburg, West Germany at the 1979 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships, but later returned to the Soviet Union. In 1991 he received 2 presidential decrees from Lithuania the Order of the Cross of Vytis and the Commemorative Medal. He was also named Lithuanian Athlete of the Year in 1973 and 1974.
