Aged 18yrs. Died in Chicago, IL.

Charles Mitchell, colored, died in a hospital in Chicago Sunday afternoon at 2:15 o'clock, aged 18 years. According to the story of his parents, the young man, when about 12 years of age, was playing around the Wabash tracks, wheeling a little wagon up and down, and in his play he enraged a man named Reilley, who was a Wabash watchman at that time. The watchman struck the boy a blow on the top of the head and in some manner injured the lad's brain. The doctor at that time said he could never fully recover the shock. Suit was brought against Reilley and a judgement for $500 obtained. The boy has been been treated lately for his eyes in Chicago, and it seems his eyes were affected as the result of his injuries received at the hands of Reilley, years ago. One eye was taken entirely out to save the other, but the lad could not stand the shock and as the result died.

He leaves to mourn his loss his parents, three brothers and three sisters, they are John, Frank, Ruby, Clyde, Bertha and Phoebe Mitchell, all reside at No. 1709 East Mason street. IL State Register, Springfield, IL 6-22-1897
