David was born* near Richmond, Virginia. When he was a small boy his father took him to Boone County, Kentucky. He married Martha Ann Noell in Boone County on September 12, 1843. (Refer to the Find A Grave memorial for his father, John Ballard, for more information.)
He fought for the Confederacy throughout the Civil War. In 1874 he moved to Texas and farmed for 15 years in Kaufman County before moving to Dallas in 1889. In the 1880 census for Kaufman County he was listed with his wife and six children: James W. Ballard, John Ballard, David B. Ballard, Mary E. Ballard, Mattie B. Ballard, and Rebecca Ballard. In the 1910 census David was living in Dallas with his son John.
