He married Mattie Suzanne Phillips on January 19, 1882, in Hardin, Tennessee. They had nine children in 21 years. He died on November 30, 1923, in Kilbourne, Louisiana, at the age of 64 and was buried in Eudora, Arkansas. Located at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Eudora, Chicot Co. AR. At the foot of his and wife Mattie's grave, is buried "the twins" stillborn children born to Janie Isaac Meeks Newell and John Lawson Newell, also, another grandson is buried at their feet, he was John Oliver Newell, another child of Janie and John Lawson Newell. To the left of Mattie is buried John Jr. Meeks, their grandson, (their son John Meeks child). Their son and daughter in law, John and Helen Meeks are buried near them.
