A Tragedy at Grantville
Mrs. James Abel Shot and Killed in Her Home.
A double tragedy was enacted at the farm house of James Abel, one and a half miles south of Grantville, at 2 o'clock today [Wednesday] when the hired man, Daniel Loganston, shot and killed Mrs. Abel and then ended his own life with the same weapon.
The dead bodies were found soon after the tragedy when Pearl, a daughter of the family who had been away, came home and entered the house to find her mother lying dead on the floor covered with blood and shot through the head. Through the open door of the next room, the girl saw the prostrate body of the hired man, also dead and lying in a pool of blood. The coroner from Oskaloosa had not reached the scene of the tragedy at 3 p.m. The hired man, Daniel Loganston, had been discharged this morning and it is suspected that the man became angry and returned to the farm house intent on crime. The community is greatly excited. --Wednesday's Topeka Journal.
The tragic death of Mrs. Abel has cast a gloom over the entire community, and is a sad blow to the family. Loganston, who did the shooting, lived several hours after shooting himself, and made a dying statement to several parties to the effect that the shooting of Mrs. Abel was accidental; that he had been out shooting blue jays and when putting the gun away it went off accidentally, killing her. It seems to be a fact that Loganston had been out shooting blue jays, as some of them were found where he had shot them.
The Capital says today: "Some of the people near Grantville believe that the killing was accidental, but not all of them do. There is a division in the Abel household over it. Abel declares he believes it was an accident. Miss Riggs, a daughter of the murdered woman, declares she is certain that her mother's death was premeditated by Loganston and that he killed her to get even with Abel for discharging him and compelling him to leave the place."
The funeral of Mrs. Abel will be held at the Methodist church here tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at 2 o'clock, and interment will be made in Oak Ridge cemetery. The F.A.A., of which the deceased was a member, will have charge of the funeral.

Funeral of Mrs. Abel
The funeral of Mrs. J.B. Abel, who met an untimely death last Wednesday at her home near Grantville, was held at the Methodist church here Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Shutt conducted the services and the sweet, solemn music of the choir touched every heart. The casket was covered with the most beautiful floral designs. At the close of the services an unusually long procession followed the funeral car to our silent city. The F.A.A., of which the deceased was a member, had charge of the services at the grave. In the presence of such sorrow how cold and inadequate are words. None but those who have sat in the shadow of a great bereavement can justly weigh such sorrow as this. She will be greatly missed, not only by her family, but by neighbors and friends,, as she was always ready to help those in trouble or sickness. Her cheerful, helpful life; her devotion as wife, mother and daughter; her kindness to everybody will long linger as a fragrant memory.
We extend sympathy to the bereaved family in this their great loss.
The following relatives were here to attend the funeral: Mrs. Jennie Wise and daughter, Pansy, Tonganoxie; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Conner, Burlingame; Mr. and Mrs. Wes Conner, Mr. and Mrs. Archie Messersmith, Roy Lakey and Hosea Yost of Topeka.
Lizzie A. Noggle was born Feb. 25, 1860, in Illinois and died near Grantville, Kan., Wednesday, May 26, 1909, aged 49 years, 3 months and 1 day. She came to Kansas with parents when a girl and has lived in Jefferson Co., every since, with the exception of a couple of years. She leaves to mourn her loss a husband, Mr. J. B. Abel, an aged father, Mr. L. B. [Lewis Benjamin] Noggle, and two daughters, by a former marriage, Mrs. Nellie Ottinger and Miss Pearl Riggs, and one sister, Mrs. Jennie Wise.
