He played both the outfield and third base positions for Major League Baseball's Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Braves, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, and Houston Astros from 1951 to 1966. He signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1947 as an amateur free agent and debuted with the team in 1951. He went on to play for the Pirates for eight seasons and played in three All-Star games (1954, 1955, and 1958) during his time with the club. He also finished fourth in the National League Most Valuable Player award voting in 1958. He was traded to the Cincinnati Reds in 1959 and played for them for one year before being traded to the Chicago Cubs in 1960. During the 1961 season, he was traded by the Cubs to the Milwaukee Braves. In 1962, he joined the expansion New York Mets and went on to play for them for three seasons before being traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in 1964. In 1962, he led the expansion Mets with 34 home runs and 94 RBIs. He played for the Phillies for a year and a half before being sold to the Houston Astros in July of 1965. In September of that same year, he was traded to the Braves but was released in April of the following year. He joined the Chicago Cubs but played briefly for the club until being released in May of 1966. He retired after that and his career statistics included a .266 batting average with 286 home runs and 962 RBIs.
