U.S. Congressman. He served in the United States House of Representatives from the 1st District of South Carolina from January 3, 1987, to January 3, 1995. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1945 to 1946. Later he attended the College of Charleston, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in 1950. After college, he worked as both a realtor and general contractor. From 1953 to 1959, he served, as a Democrat, in the South Carolina House of Representatives. He became a Republican in the early 1960s and sought various offices during the 1960s and 1970s. In 1980, he was elected to the South Carolina Senate and went on to serve there until 1986, when he decided to seek a seat in the United States House of Representatives. He was successful in the November general election that year and went on to serve in Congress for four terms before stepping down to seek the governorship of South Carolina in 1994. He was unsuccessful in that bid and went on to serve again in the South Carolina Senate from 1996 to 2005.
