Buried in an unmarked grave next to the grave marked Thomas J Register.

She and James Thomas Register, her third husband, married 25 Nov 1887 in Marion Co, Florida. But be aware that he was also originally buried in an unmarked grave. However in 1939 the Umatilla Chapter of the DAR filed for a US War Department tombstone based on information given to them by a local chapter of the Spanish American War Veterans organization. However they were unaware that there were two Thomas Registers in his military unit (the First Florida Volunteer Infantry) and their application was for the wrong person! However since the Thomas J Register was a veteran of that unit, the application was approved, the tombstone was made and shipped to the husband of the regent of the DAR chapter and it was erected. Long story short, most of the information on Thomas Register's tombstone is incorrect. I do not manage the webpage for his grave and I have not been able to get the current manager to correct his information. James Thomas Register died intestate in Lake County, Florida on 5 August 1920 and on 9 August 1920 his half-uncle McGlon from Volusia county was appointed to administer his estate. I will post more about him here later.

Charity was born in South Carolina or possibly in Screven County, Georgia. In 1850 her family was in Screven County. On 13 August 1858 in Bulloch County she married William Rupert Sills and in the same year she had a son William Sills. They are all shown in the 1860 census.

At some point she and William split up* and she took up with Thomas Rigdon from Bullock county. I have not found a divorce record for her and William or a marriage record for her and Thomas but Sherman's troops destroyed many of the court houses in Georgia so they may have been destroyed.

In late 1864, Sherman's troops pillaged that part of Georgia and Charity left and walked to Florida with her son William and a daughter named Harriet**. They are in Columbia County, Florida in 1870 and all are now named Rigdon. At that time Charity thinks that she is a widow but she wasn't. Thomas Rigdon was captured at Savannah in December 1864 and imprisoned in Ft Lookout, Maryland and did survive the war.

On 8 July 1865 her third child Mitchell Rigdon is born in Columbia County. In 1876 she has a daughter Alice and in 1878 she has another daughter Ida (their fathers unknown to me). In 1880 they are all in Precinct 10, Marion, Florida and she still says that she is a widow.

On the 30th of June 1884 she is given a land grant in Marion County, Florida just feet north of the Lake County Line and just west of Lake Emma. Many of her descendants still live on a local family farm only about 2 miles from she homesteaded.

*In 1864 Bullock County, William R Sills married Noami Hendrix. Oddly enough, William and Charity had been married by JP James Hendrix, Naomi's father!

** Harriet is shown in the 1870 census age 8 but I have found no other record of her.
