His gravestone simply lists him as 'D. Royal' however the following marriage record gives us his given name:
****************************************
Mississippi Marriages, 1826-1900
Name: DICKERSON ROYAL
Spouse: MARTHA A. ROCKETT
Marriage Date: 11 Oct 1858
County: Lafayette
State: MS
--------------------------------
Dickerson (28) and Martha (21) are listed in the 1860 Federal Census of Lafayette County, (Post Office - Paris) Mississippi.
They have 1 child, Alice who is 7 months old.

By 1870 they have moved to Township 11 (Post Office - Water Valley), Mississippi. The spelling of his given name is hard to decipher in the census image. Ancestry.com has transcribed it as 'Devon' but it could be 'Dexon'. Alice is still their only child and she is now 10 years old.
Dickerson has only aged 5 years in the past 10 being listed as 33, while Martha is now 31.

In 1880 they are in the 2nd Supervisor District of Yalobusha County, but Alice who should now be about 20 is listed as age 17. The big surprise is that they now have 8 children (and "one in the oven"). There are 3 boys listed that should have been in the 1870 Census.
"Richard" is 44 and Martha is 38 years old.

The 1900 Federal Census of Water Valley, Yalobusha, Mississippi finds "Ritchard" and Martha still living with 2 children in the house: John D. (24) and Robert R. (19) who was born just 2 months after the 1880 Census. They are both buried in Oak Hill Cemetery. Martha and Richard are listed as having been married for 44 years (actually 41 years, 8 months). Martha is listed as being the mother of 10 children, of whom 9 are still living. The deceased child is Mary Ida Royal who is also buried in Oak Hill Cemetery. Her birth year is listed as 1869 but she was not enumerated in the 1870 Census. She died in 1877.
The June 1900 Census should be the most accurate regarding birth dates and it lists "Ritchard" as being born in April 1836 and 64 years of age. His gravestone denotes 1836. Martha, born in July 1840 is 59 years old, her gravestone states 1841.
Their daughter Lennie Pearl married John T. Hellums. They are both interred in Oak Hill.
Their daughter Jessie married John Rowan Markette. They also are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.
