Velva Mitchell, 86 of Cape Girardeau, passed away Thursday, January 12, 2023 at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.

She was born August 30, 1936 in Potosi, Missouri, daughter of Clarence and Dollie Summers Ray. She and Jerry Ray Mitchell were married June 16, 1956 in St. Louis. He passed away June 17, 2004.

She and Jerry settled in St. Louis where they raised their family. After retiring they moved to Jackson in 1988. Velva attended The Bridge Church in Cape Girardeau.

Loving survivors include two children, Michael (Kathy Hollenbeck) Mitchell of Cape Girardeau and Shelby (John) Stroup of Gordonville; five grandchildren Jessica (Brendon) Kooyer, Amanda (Brett) Jeffers, Ryan (Morgan) Stroup, Lindsay (Lacey) Stroup) and Kelly (Kaci) Mitchell; and seven great grandchildren; Mackenzie, Dylan, Alyssa, Olivia, Josie, Annette and Summit.

Also surviving are two brothers, Marty (Cathy) Ray and Gary (Bonnie) Ray of St. Louis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry and a brother, Jack Ray.

The visitation will be from 9:30 AM until service time Saturday, January 21, 2023 at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.

The funeral service will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at the funeral home with Rocky and Laura Strand officiating.

Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in St. Louis.
