U.S. Navy AM1 Roderick Charles "Rory" Carnes Jr., 35, of Jacksonville, Fla., passed away Monday in Norfolk, Va., aboard the U.S.S. Washington while on active duty. He was born in Warner Robins, Ga., in 1972, and was Presbyterian by faith. He was a graduate of Warner Robins High School and received his bachelor's degree from Columbia University. He was currently pursuing a master's degree from Webster University while serving his country. He was an avid sports enthusiast and loved his Georgia Bulldogs. He was an aviation mechanic with the U.S. Navy for over 17 years. Some of his many achievements include Diamond of the Year in VS-20 in 2007, Maintenance Man of the Year in VS-22 in 2007, six Navy achievement medals, a Desert Storm award, and an Iraqi Freedom award. He is survived by his wife, Lana Carnes of Jacksonville; children, Amber Nicole Carnes of Kathleen, Ga., and Gianna Carnes of Jacksonville, Fla.; parents, Beth and Richard Huff of Warner Robins, and Roderick C. Carnes Sr. and Evelyn Carnes of Huntsville; brothers, the Rev. Marty Carnes and wife Cindy of Quitman, Ga., David Huff of Warner Robins; niece and nephew, Sarah and Andrew Carnes; parents-in-law, Karen and Andy Boyd of Jacksonville and Lanny Putman of Jacksonville; grandparents, Peggy Lanehart of Warner Robins and Doris Carnes of San Antonio; and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.
