Second Lieutenant John Preston Wright (1917 – 1942)
Rockmart native. Entered the Army during World War II after completing college. He served as a Pilot with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. His family was notified that he was Missing in Action when his plane went down over the Pacific Ocean in a secret bombing mission in July 1942. A month later the family was told that he was dead. Lieutenant Wright, his crew, nor his plane were ever recovered. With no remains returned for burial, his family later placed a tombstone in Rose Hill cemetery over an empty grave. Only twenty-five, Wright was survived by his wife of only a few months, his parents, a brother and a sister. The Brown-Wright American Legion Post 12 Rockmart bears his name along with the name of World War I combat casualty Raymor Brown, also a Rockmart native, buried in Rose Hill Cemetery.
