2323 Private A E Soper, 2nd Battalion the (Queen's Own) Royal West Kent Regiment. He deployed with his battalion to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Bavarian on 16 Mar 1900, and arrived at the Cape on 6 Apr 1900. Along with the 1st Worcestershire Regiment, 1st South Staffordshire Regiment, and 2nd Manchester Regiment, they formed the 17th Brigade under Major General Boyes. They deployed into the Orange Free State behind the main army advance to Pretoria and had many small engagements, remaining around Frankfort (East of Kroonstad) in late 1900 until the end of the campaign. Private Soper died of disease at 19 Stationary Hospital, Harrismith on 29 Dec 1900. He was buried the same day. He is also commemorated on the Royal West Kent Regiment Boer War memorial and stained glass window in All Saints Church, Bishops Way, Maidstone, Kent, England (see: http://www.roll-of-honour.com/Kent/MaidstoneAllSaintsBoer.html).
