Mary Carr Fowle was the third child of Elias Carr and Celia Johnston from Edgecombe County, NC. She married Josiah Fowle of Beaufort County, NC in January 1822 and while they were returning from a trip to the West Indies in September 1822, the ship, all crew and passengers were lost. The family suspects that pirates could have captured the ship and made the crew and passengers walk the plank as there were no storms nor hurricanes at that time.Her maternal grandfather was Colonel Jonas Johnston, soldier in the revolution and representative of Edgecombe County in the Constitutional Convention of 1776. Mary's brother Jonas Johnston Carr was the father of NC Governor Elias Carr.
