A.L. Nail, 78, of Amarillo died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Jim Bankhead officiating. Private burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Mr. Nail was born Aug. 30, 1929, in Fort Worth to Richard and Jessie Nail. He attended Texas Christian University before going into the military in 1952. He served in France until his discharge in 1954.

He married Peggy Dixon in 1948 and was a loyal and devoted husband for almost 60 years. He also was devoted to his children and grandchildren

After his discharge from the military, Mr. Nail worked for several oil field supply and service firms, Mid-Continent Supply and General Supply Co. In 1969, he and Tom Cambridge formed Cambridge & Nail Petroleum Exploration Services, a firm that provided land, geological and operational services to the industry and were active in raising limited partnership funds and drilling oil and gas projects in the Texas Panhandle area.

In 1984, they participated in forming Parallel Petroleum Corp., a public Delaware corporation merged from Cambridge & Nail limited partnerships and Parallel of Texas. Mr. Nail served on the Parallel board of directors for several years and helped provide the visions that took Parallel Petroleum Corp. from an enterprise value of less than one million dollars to a company with an enterprise value of about one billion dollars.

In 1990, Mr. Nail retired from company participation, but remained an active oil and gas investor until recently.

He loved the game of golf, both as a spectator and a player.

He served on the boards of the Presbyterian Children's Home, Bank of the Southwest, Texas Commerce Bank, Amarillo Club and Amarillo Country Club. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and member of Holland Lodge No. 1 in Houston. He also was a Shriner and a member of Khiva Temple. He was a member of the Panhandle Petroleum Landman's Association, was named Boss of the Year by the Desk & Derrick Club and served as deacon at First Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Terry Nail.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy; a daughter, Beata Crowell and husband Dennis of Amarillo; a son, Al Griffin Nail and wife Carol of Dallas; four grandchildren, Audra Lay, Laura Estes, Becca Nail and Sarah Hope Nail;

The family suggests memorials be to BSA Hospice, P.O. Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79105; or a favorite charity.
