.
On July 8, 1777, as Gen. Burgoyne's army advanced south, Thankful Fletcher (Cotton's wife) fled with their children from Poultney, VT, to Salisbury, CT. After the Battle of Bennington, a month later, it is possible that Cotton Fletcher was going to meet his family when he died in Sheffield. By 1779, widow Thankful and her children had returned to Poultney; and Cotton's estate was probated in Rutland County, Vermont.
