Alfred was born at Hahndorf, South Australia on 11 December 1911. The following birth notice was published in the South Australian newspaper, The Register, on 18 December 1911:

COWAN.— On the 11th December, at Detmold, Hahndorf, the wife of Leslie Cowan, of a son.

Alfred married Betty Louise Neighbour Simpson at the St. Peter's College Chapel in St Peters, South Australia on 3 April 1940.

Alfred served in the Royal Australian Air Force during the Second World War. He enlisted on 4 January 1941 at Adelaide, South Australia. He was discharged on 24 September 1945 with the rank of Flight Lieutenant and with a posting in the Headquarters Southern Area.

Alfred died in Adelaide, South Australia on 10 December 1968 at the age of 56 years.

Darcy's remains were cremated at the Centennial Park cemetery in Pasadena, South Australia on 12 December 1968.

In St. Peter's College Chapel on Wednesday the Rev. W. H. Irwin officiated at the marriage of Betty Louise, elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. N. Simpson, of Dequettville Terrace, Kent Town, with Mr. Alfred Darcy Cowan, eldest son of Mr. Leslie Cowan, of Riversdale, Balhannah.
