The following is from the Chesterfield Newspaper October 18, 1916:

Mr. M. C. Coker one of Chesterfield County's old and most respected citizens, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. K. R. Pittman, October 14th. Mr. Coker had been enjoying his actual good health and retired that night in good spirits. He was found dead in bed the next morning. Heart failure was said to be the cause of his death. He had suffered light attacks of this trouble previously. Mr. Coker's wife had died four previously and soon after her death he divided up the estate among his children and went to live with his daughter. He was a veteran of the Civil War having served three years from 1862 to the end of the struggle. He was 18 years of age at the time of entering the army and died at the age of 73. The funeral service was conducted at the grave side in the family cemetery in the Wexford Community. The deceased is survived by six children and 21 grandchildren. The children are Messrs: D. W., H. C. and J. M. E. Coker. Meadames: H. A. Pittman, S. J. Welsh, and S. Q. Smith.
