Sophia was born June 18, 1862 in Dakotah Territory at the Brule Creek settlement near Elk Point in the southeast corner of South Dakota. Sophia was confirmed June 3, 1878 at the age of 15 years at South Shell Rock Lutheran Church in Northwood, Iowa. The Church records state her "Christian knowledge is good" and "yes, her parents are members of the church." Sophia grew up in near Northwood, Iowa and came to North Dakota in 1880 with her family in a covered wagon. The Mikkelson family settled in the Sheyenne River Valley near McVille were Torger anf Gjertrude homesteaded and built a log cabin.

Sophia married her sister's (Anna) widower, Colben Colbenson Grindeland. Colben and Sophia lived in McVille, North Dakota area and later moved to Hatton. Sophia and Colben had 9 children. In Hatton, they had cattle and farmed. They joined Zoar Free Church in Hatton on Novemver 1, 1902 where most of their children were confirmed. Colben died November 7, 1934 at the age of 78 in Hatton. Sophia died February 3, 1953 at the age of 90 in Hatton. Both were buried in the Zoar Free Church Cemetery near Hatton, North Dakota.
