JEFFERSON, Walter Esmond, age 90, died January 24, 2011, the son of Walter Ennis Jefferson and Esther Law Jefferson of Danville, Va. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Marion Williams Jefferson. He is survived by his daughters, Debra J. Joyce and husband, Carl Franklin Joyce, of Hong Kong, Tina J. Richardson and William Hanky of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; two granddaughters, Kitchi Joyce of Atlanta, Ga., and Kami Kennedy and husband, Thomas Kennedy, of West Point, N.Y; two great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Lois W. Hughes of Roanoke, Va.; and sister-in-law, Jacqueline D. Stansbury of Richmond, Va. Born in Danville, Va., he graduated from George Washington High School and Abbott Art School in Washington, D.C. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Navy, participated in the Pacific Theater and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. After serving eight years in the Navy, he resided in Washington, D.C., working for the State Department and The Washington Post. In 1953, he relocated to Richmond and was employed by Southern States Cooperative as art and advertising director for 32 years. As a member of the Virginia Watercolor Society, he exhibited in shows throughout the country, where he received numerous awards of recognition for his watercolors. He was also well known in Richmond for his pen and ink drawings of Richmond landmark scenes and stationary. He was a member of Bon Air Presbyterian Church. He was actively involved in supporting the board of directors with creative ideas and materials for the Richmond Home for Ladies which later transitioned into Covenant Woods Retirement Community. A service of celebration of his life will be held at Covenant Woods, 7090 Covenant Woods Dr., on Saturday, January 29 at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at a reception following the service. Interment will be private. The family would like to thank the caring staff at Covenant Woods for their love and support.
