Joseph married Elizabeth Jane McGee on 1 Feb 1838 in Johnson County, IN. They had 10 children; John, Isaac, Sarah, Mary, William, Oliver, Samuel, Nancy, Laura and Thomas. On the 1850 census he was a carpenter and owned 100 acres of land.

Joseph's DOD is unknown. There are dates on various genealogy websites from 1850 to 1901, but with no supporting evidence for any of them. His youngest child Thomas was born in 1857 and his wife shows as widowed on the 1880 census.

Joseph, his brother William and Joseph's father-in-law William McGee are listed as some of the first settlers in Pleasant Township, Johnson County, Indiana in 1834 on page 153 of 'A Historical Sketch of Johnson County, Indiana' by David D. Banta.
