ELDRIDGE HARTLESS
Eldridge Hartless, a son of one of the oldest pioneer families to settle in this part of Oregon, passed away at his home in Philomath on the night of November 10th at the age of 62 years, 4 months and 15 days. Mrs. Hartless did not discover that he had passed away until morning.
Mr. Hartless had been in ill health for a long time, but had been as well as
usual and his death came as a great shock to his relatives and friends.
Mr. Hartless was one of a large family of children and was born about one
mile south of Philomath where he lived for nearly 40 years.
On December 23, 1889, he married Miss Metha Dittmar and to this union was
born one daughter, Emily, who is now Mrs. C. G. Staley of Forest Grove, and who
with the mother survives.
For the past 25 years Mr. Hartless and his family have resided in Philomath.
His father conducted one of the first merchandise stores at Marysville,
afterwards changed to Corvallis.
Besides the widow and daughter one sister, Mrs. Clara Zimmerman of Portland,
and on half-brother and sister, Rev. John Bates, of Buffalow, NY and Mrs.
Virginia Cleveland of Washington, and a large number of nieces and nephews survive.
Services were conducted at the College church on November 13, at 2 o’clock,
Rev. Wm. Nicholes officiating.
Followed by a large concourse of relatives and friends the body was conveyed
to its last resting place in Mount Union cemetery and the mortal remains of
Eldridge Hartless were laid beside those of his parents and brothers and
sisters, some of whom proceeded him nearly on-half century ago.
The myriad of flowers, that nearly covered the grave, were very beautiful and
a touching tribute to the esteem in which the departed was held by his neighbors
and associates.
He had been a member of the Woodman of the World for about 25 years and the
pallbearers were chosen from the members of the lodge.
