Matriarch: an older woman who is powerful within a family. That was her! She was a trailblazer and has raised some incredibly strong women!

We lost my beautiful Granny today and we are all heartbroken. She wasn't your average grandmother. She was different! She was a spitfire! She walked into a room and DEMANDED attention with her charisma and could control a crowd with her presence. Wow, was she gorgeous!

Her life wasn't easy. She had to grow up fast and was an only child. She was fiercely independent and didn't need or want anyone to take care of her. She had 4 little babies while working full time and finishing her degree. She didn't want to be a burden. She was as stubborn as they come and fought until the very end of her life.

She was a college professor at Jacksonville State and the things she did for special education in the state of Alabama deserves a medal of some sort. If she asked you for money to support the cause, you wrote the check!

Some of my favorite childhood memories were at her house in Anniston. She was generous. She gave us the fanciest gifts and made sure we had a pretty matching outfit each year for Christmas. Her home was full of loud laughter at the holidays while all of the cousins set up our sleeping bags around her bed so we could be near her. For some reason she decided to take all of the grandkids on vacation one year and that took her bravery to a new level!

My Granny, Wanda Wigley, was a trip! She had some stories to tell. One time she won the "best legs" contest. She was the first female Elk and demanded they let her in the club. She rode as the Queen on some floats in the Mardi Gras parades. She went to The Masters every single year and became known by the locals as the owner of "Piggly Wiggly". The woman never met a stranger and had so many best friends.

She loved my girls. She LOVED to watch them dance. She said they got their moves from her and she meant it! Everytime we saw her she made them dance for her and her heart was filled with joy! Today when they found out that GG had passed away, they were at dance rehearsals and their precious friends gave them love, hugs and encouragement. I know that would have made her happy.

She threatened Chaston several times and told him that if he broke my heart, she knew people who would take care of him (all with a cunning smile and a kiss on the forehead). I believe her. She was protective.

She moved to Perdido Key in the early 90's after my Pop died and she retired. Other than Leesburg, Alabama, that place felt like a second home to me. We have so many memories with her and our family there and that is why we bought a home there.

She was proud. Proud of her family. Proud of her accomplishments. Proud of her self-made life. I am proud to be her granddaughter and I know she was proud of me!

I'll miss you Granny but we will all be dancing together in Heaven again soon.

I Love You. Amy Lee Rooks, granddaughter
