Ray Vernon Brian, of Hutchinson, passed away February 13, 2020, at his home. He was born August 1, 1931, in Oakley, Kansas, to Roy and Thela Brian.
Ray was a graduate of Fort Hays State University, where he majored in business and played football for the Fort Hays Tigers. Prior to college he served in the United States Navy, where he was on the Navy football team and served as an aviation electrician on the USS Oriskany.
Ray married Phyllis Watkins of Sublette, Kansas, on June 1, 1957.
Ray worked for the Social Security Administration in Dodge City before moving to Hutchinson, where he worked as a field representative, and then assistant manager of the Hutchinson office. Ray was a Freemason, Shriner, member of the Hutchinson Civitan Club, and the United States Golf Association, where he served as a rules official in tournaments. He was an avid golfer and member of Prairie Dunes Country Club for over 40 years.
Ray is survived by: his wife, Phyllis; their children Mitch Brian, Tronda Roselius and Kristi Brian; seven grandchildren, Sam and Zoe Brian, Riley, Erin, and Ely Roselius, Nina and Iris Brian-Smith; sisters, Dora Hopson, Dona Plantz, Mary Torbet; and brothers, Gene Brian and Bob Brian.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Phil Brian; and sister, Sharon Brian.
Cremation has taken place. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, February 20, 2020, at Elliott Chapel. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday at Elliott Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the PGA Reach Program to positively impact the lives of youth, military and diverse populations through the game of golf, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
