James (Jim) Kenneth Keane, 77, from Phoenix, Arizona and formerly from Sioux City, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2022 in Phoenix after seven years with dementia. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is assisting with arrangements. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 6, 2023 at Holy Cross Blessed Sacrament Church with family present beginning at 4:00 pm. Following urn burial at Calvary Cemetery, the family will be hosting a reception at the Marriott Riverfront Hotel in South Sioux City, Nebraska. Jim was born in Omaha, Nebraska on April 6, 1945 to Dr. Kenneth and Dorothy (Meyer) Keane. He was the oldest of 12 children. Jim graduated from Heelan High School in 1963 and attended Rockhurst University before graduating from the University of South Dakota. He had many leadership roles throughout his education. Jim was an avid athlete and held the Heelan High School long jump record for over 50 years. As a young teenager, Jim met the love of his life Mary Mugan, whom he married in 1968. Together they raised three children Greg, Susan, and John. During Jim's 35-year career with New York Life Insurance Company, he obtained his Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) license and achieved many accolades due to his continued education and admirable work ethic. In 2013, Jim and Mary were drawn to the sun and moved to Phoenix, AZ. Jim became a full-time grandpa, a role he cherished. Jim was a man of strong faith. He was active in Christians in Commerce, Right to Life, Marriage Encounter, Cursillo, the board of Mary Queen of Peace, and the recovery community where he celebrated 40 years of sobriety. He was preceded in death by his parents Dr. Kenneth and Dorothy Keane; Mary's parents Dr. Robert and Hazel Mugan; uncle Steve Keane, brothers-in-law Paul Tebbe and Tom Treinen, and nephew Alvin Danguilan. Survivors include his wife Mary Keane of Phoenix, AZ; children Greg (Theresa) Keane of Omaha, NE; Susan (Chuck) Lanphier of Sammamish, WA; John (Maggie) Keane of Phoenix, AZ; 10 grandchildren, 8 brothers (Bob, Tom, Mike, Ed, Dan, David, John and Kevin) and 3 sisters, (Mary Jean Mugan, Kathy Kallin and Therese Risinger), many in-laws, and over 50 nieces and nephews. Jim's greatest joys came from spending quality time with his family, playing cards and board games, watching sports and funny movies, and making us all laugh. His humor and witty jokes brought smiles to so many loved ones and even strangers! Jim's family is very grateful for all the support and prayers their family and friends offered throughout Jim's illness. The staff at Brookdale Desert Ridge Memory Care and Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix were very kind and loving to Jim and family. As we celebrate Jim's life, we do so with a smile on our face in fond memory of his love for us all.
