Killed in the crash of B-26B Marauder #41-17668 in Highlands County, Florida.
While on an evening training flight, the aircraft flew into a small hill, near Venus, Florida, at a high rate of speed and was utterly destroyed by the impact.

It took the Army a considerable amount of time to discover the wreck site and to locate small amounts of the crew's remains. Investigators could not determine a cause for the crash.

All seven men aboard were killed:

2Lt. David Furman, Co-Pilot
Sgt. Emory D. Barton, Flight Engineer
Sgt. Douglas G Johns, Radio Operator
Sgt. Charles Schwamberg, Gunner
Sgt. Vernal M Skarison, Gunner
Sgt. Floyd V Wyatt, Asst. Engineer
