John was a son of Henry Terrell and his wife, Rachel Johnson. He married Mary "Polly" Gerkin in 1875 and they had three children; Henry "Martin" Terrell, Charlie A., and Sarah Liefie. They all went to Nebraska in the fall of 1881 and they came down with Typhoid Fever. John and Martin were the only survivors, and in a year they moved back to Indiana. In 1886 John married Carrie Chapman, and their children were; Estella, George, Elmer,Enoch, Walter,and a baby girl who died at birth.
