Kirtland Kay Kitchen "Kirt" was born May 11, 1948, in Moscow, Idaho, where his father was attending the university. He attended grade schools in Roswell, Canyon County, and in Stockton, Calif. The family spent summers in the Yellow Pine area on his grandfather's holding on Johnson Creek. He attended Wilder High School, boarding with his Aunt Helen and Uncle Ralph Branson. He joined the army in 1966 and served in Vietnam. He received the Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze service stars.

After his discharge from the Army, he returned to Boise. He attended Boise State University, where he earned a Bachelor Of Music, graduating in 1976 and receiving his teaching certificates. He played trumpet in a local jazz trio, "Chops." He also played with the Boise Philharmonic. He joined the Navy and served for twenty years reaching the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He served in the Persian Gulf. His isolated duty assignments included McMurdo Station, Antarctica, and Diego Garcia. He was authorized to wear the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.

In the 1986 he bought the family Yellow Pine cabin becoming the third generation of Yellow Pine property owners. He had made his home in Emmett since his retirement from the Navy. He worked for the Bureau of Reclamation until his retirement. He was a Master Gardener and enjoyed fishing and exploring old trails in the Yellow Pine area.

Kirt died Thursday, October 13, 2022, at the age of 74, in a Boise hospital. He was survived by two brothers and his soulmate and partner of 30 years.
