Obituary Abstract

In Milton, Pa., on the 30th day of December, 1861, Matthias Strine, Sr., in the 86th year of his age.

He was born in York Co., Pa., somewhere between York and Gettysburg, on the 22d of April, 1776. He was confirmed at an early age, in the Lutheran church, by Dr. John G. Schmucker. He was married in York, in the year 1801 and not long afterwards removed to Harrisburg, and then to Mifflinburg, Union Co., Pa. He resided there until 1818, when he moved to Milton, where he lived the rest of his life. He outlived his partner, who died nearly two years ago. He was a devoted and a firm Lutheran. The deceased leaves six sons.

At the end of the obituary notice there is the following footnote ---

"N.B. As a singular coincidence, we learn that an only brother of the deceased living in York, Pa., was stricken with paralysis on the night of the 31st ult., the night after father Strine's death and is probably ere this dead and buried."

1st Special Note:

The death of the brother referred to above is (George) Charles Strine, who died on January 5, 1862. See Find a Grave # 37642095. Charles was a son of Peter and Anna Margaret Strine. Charles was born on July 2, 1778 and baptized on August 9, 1778 at Quickel's Church located in Conewago Township in York County, PA. Charles was married to Catharina Detmer and lived in York Borough, York County, PA. (Source: York County Historical Society, York, PA)

2nd Special Note:

From biographies of George Strine in two separate books on Northumberland County history from 1876 and 1891 and a 2nd obituary for Daniel Strine, there is mention of nine children, which suggests there is possibly a 3rd unknown daughter.
