HERBERT ANDREW GOFORTH 1903-1980 Herbert Andrew Goforth was born in Sardis, Mississippi, to Andrew Nathaniel and Mattie Horne Goforth on December 21, 1903. Having graduated from high school in Lexington, Tennessee he enrolled in Lambuth College in preparation for the ordained ministry. Herbert was a faithful minister of the Gospel, a devoted pastor, an able preacher and a loyal member of the Annual Conference. In 1927 he was welcomed into the Memphis Conference on Probation and two years later into Full Connection. A trusted and true friend to his colleagues, he blessed the clergy fellowship with his sense of humor and perspective. One last ounce of his energy, Herbert used to salute a beloved fellow clergyman the evening before he died.Herbert's appointment to Calvert City Circuit in 1927 was the beginning of 44 years in the itinerant ministry. His and Erda's ministry included appointments to Brazil Circuit, Ralston and Finley Circuits, Munford, Longview Heights, Mercer Circuit, East Dyersburg, Troy, Rives, Bardwell, Wickliffe, Bruceton, Decaturville, Halls, Raleigh,Stephenson's Chapel, Browns, Oak Grove and Oakfield-Mt. Carmel. Herbert and Erda moved to Jackson in 1971 to begin a fruitful retirement.Very much a family man, Herbert married Erda McClanahan and, though weakened greatly by illness, he joined his family in a beautiful celebration of their Golden Wedding Anniversary on June 1,1980. To that marriage, and surviving with Erda, are two sons Herbert Andrew, Jr. and Walter Mack Goforth. Also surviving are four grandsons, William, David, Michael and Matthew. After having battled courageously with persistent illness for ten years, Herbert died on October 13.Harold Watkins and Paul Clayton officiated at his Memorial Services held at Forest Heights United Methodist Church, where he and Erda were faithful participants. Burial was in Jackson's Highland Memorial Gardens. ·Herbert shall be long honored for his supreme hopefulness. He never once in his earthly battle gave evidence of loss of hope, even against great odds. A favorite poem of his was Tennyson's "Crossing The Bar." That poem concludes with:"For tho' from out our borne of time and place. The flood may hear me far, I hope to see my pilot face to face. When I have crossed the bar." How appropriate to be repeated at the end! Herbert sailed his ship of life toward the eternal port of God with all his banners of faith, hope and love flying. Thanks be to God who gave him and gives us this victory.[signed] Paul W. Clayton As Printed in the Memphis Conference Journal of the United Methodist Church 1981.
