Les Abernathy, age 94, of Jonesboro, passed from this life on Friday, November 18, 2022, at NEA Baptist Hospital in Jonesboro.

Les was born January 24, 1928, in Forsyth, Georgia, to Leslie C. Sr. and Ruth Grant Abernathy. He grew up in Miami, Florida, and Memphis. Les served in Naval Aviation from 1945-1947 and in June 1947, he married his high school sweetheart, Marguerite Orr. In 1956, Les moved with his family to Jonesboro where he resided for the remainder of his life. Les retired in 2004 after 50 years service in the business forms industry. He was a life member of the Moore Business Form, Inc. sales club.

Les was an active member of First United Methodist Church since 1956. He served his church in many capacities including Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Chairman of the Council on Ministries. Les taught various church school classes including the Friendship Couples class of which he and Marguerite were members.

Les was a former Scoutmaster and Little League baseball coach. He was active in civic affairs, a former Jaycee and long-time member of the Exchange Club of Jonesboro, active since 1956.

Les was a member and past president of the Jonesboro Country Club. He was an avid golfer and 9-time Club Champion. Les was twice named Arkansas Senior Golfer of the Year. He and Marguerite were blessed to share the love of golf. They were twice each Club Champion in the same year. Les and Marguerite won numerous mixed pairs tournaments throughout the area. Following retirement, Les enjoyed gardening and almost daily golf games with the "Noon Gang."

Les was preceded in death by his parents and his wife and best friend for 68 years, Marguerite.

Survivors include his son, Dr. Leslie "Skip" Stewart-Abernathy and his wife, Judith, of Dardanelle; his daughters: Karen Abernathy of Trumann, and Leigh Abernathy and her husband David Howard of Tumbling Shoals;

2 sisters: June Wake of Adair, Oklahoma, and Barbara Caldwell of Memphis;

5 grandchildren: Elizabeth, Ben, Michael, Grant and Hugo; and

5 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m.Saturday, December 10, 2022, at Emerson Memorial Chapel with Pastor John Miles officiating. Burial will follow in Jonesboro Memorial Park.

Active Pallbearers include Bill Grimes, Dan Raines, Fred Yawn, Michael Caldwell, Fred Hargett, Vilas Elder and Lee Brun. Honorary pallbearers include Layne Yawn, Dewaine Beisner, members of the Friendly Believers Sunday School Class and members of the Exchange Club.

Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 p.m., prior to the service in the Chapel.
