Sarah "Sally" Haynes was the daughter of John Barton Haynes and Rhoda A. Huff of Ohio County, Kentucky. Sally was born there on August 14, 1822 in Ohio County, Kentucky. She married James Yandell Tilford there on March 21, 1843. He was the son of Nicholas Calvin Tilford and Jane DeMastus origianlly from Amherst County, Virginia. James was born May 5, 1820 in Tennessee before the family moved to Alabama.

James and Sally were the parents of 12 children:

James Tilford was shown as a Blacksmith in the 1850, 1860 and 1880 Grayson County census records and as a Merchant in the 1870 Grayson County census. Sally was a housewife and mother. She died at the age of 69 years, 7 months and 30 days on April 13, 1892 in Caneyville, Kentucky. They were both buried in the Caneyville Cemetery in Grayson County, Kentucky.
