DURAND - Ruth M. DeLong, 85 of Durand died Monday, Feb. 18, 2008, at Chippewa Valley Hospital in Durand.

Ruth was born Nov. 2, 1922, and was raised in Arkansaw. She was the daughter of Jerry and Lena (Poquette) Brunette. She attended school in Porcupine before going to St. Mary's High School for two years. Ruth married Andrew Bignell at the age of 16. Andrew died in 1959. Ruth worked as a nurse's aide at Chippewa Valley Hospital for 34 years. She later married Hiram DeLong, Sr.; and he died in 1976. Ruth had been a resident of Oakview Care Center for several years.

Ruth loved to play cards and bingo. She enjoyed fishing, was an active member of the church and volunteered at the senior citizens center. Most of all, she loved spending time with family and friends.

Ruth is survived by one son, Hiram (Shari) DeLong, of Arkansaw; three sisters, Alice Staiger of Red Wing, Minn., Beatrice (Putter) Bauer of Durand and Geraldine (Arlin) Kees of White Bear Lake, Minn.; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Andrew Bignell, in 1959; second husband, Hiram DeLong, Sr., in 1976; one daughter, Mary DeLong, in infancy; two stepchildren, Mildred Hutter and Raymond DeLong; three sisters, Margaret Erwin, Ethel Rageth and Jean Hurlburt.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Durand. The Rev. Jeffrey Burrill will officiate. Burial will be in Arkansaw French Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Rhiel Funeral Home in Durand, and one hour before services at the church on Thursday.

Arrangements are by Rhiel Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Durand.
