VIRGINIA BEACH - Robert Winfield Cartwright, 78, of Virginia Beach and Killeen, Texas, died May 12, 2003, in a Virginia Beach hospital.
Mr. Cartwright was a native of Munden, Va. He was the son of the late John Cartwright Sr. and Pauline Cartwright and was also preceded in death by two brothers, John W. Cartwright Jr. and Winfred Hunter Cartwright, his first wife, Drucella Cartwright, and stepdaughter, Bettye Gregory Hensley.
Mr. Cartwright was a member of V.F.W. Back Bay Post 1211 in Virginia Beach. He had retired from the U.S. Army after more than 20 years, serving in World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He was was a member of Youngsport Church of Christ Church in Killeen. He was a wonderful, loving husband and will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He impacted many lives in Virginia Beach and Killeen.
Survivors include his wife of three years, Velma Gregory Cartwright of Virginia Beach and Killeen; two sisters, Madeline Smith and Margaret Hightower, both of Virginia Beach; six stepchildren, Raymond Burns of Thrall, Texas, Mary Ellen Johnson of Whiteville, N.C., Susan Goldberg of Baltimore, Rachel Rodriguez, Lonnie Gregory and Terry Gregory, all of Virginia Beach; 19 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends who loved him dearly.
A funeral will held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 15, at Charity United Methodist Church in Virginia Beach by the Rev. Robert Cooper. The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel.
A funeral will also be held at 1 p.m. Monday, May 19, at Youngsport Church of Christ in Killeen by Minister Edd Melton Jr. Interment will follow at Live Oak Cemetery in Killeen with military honors. The family will receive friends Sunday, May 18, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Crawford & Bowers Funeral Home, Killeen. The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to Youngsport Church of Christ, Route 2, Box 100C, Killeen, TX 76542.
