BEDFORD — Bert Lewis, 91, 1017 R Street, Bedford, died at 8:52 a.m. Monday at the Bedford Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 27, 1916, in Martin County, he was the son of William and Anna (Brannon) Lewis. He married Mary Ruth Simmons on Nov. 16, 1935, and she survives.

He retired as a welder from General Motors in 1981 and was a farmer in Martin County. He was a graduate of Heltonville High School with the class of 1935. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He was a member of the Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion and the Free Methodist Church in Bedford.

He was an avid checker player, horse shoe pitcher and bowler.

Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Mary Ruth of Bedford; one daughter, Peggy Rose Colgan and husband Pastor David Colgan of Bedford; grandchildren: Mark Colgan and wife Kathy of Upland, Deron Colgan and wife Jennifer of Elkhart, Amy Colgan of Bloomington, Bryan Lewis of Illinois, and Thomas Lewis and Anna Marie Lewis, both of Arizona; a foster daughter, Ruthie Sanders and husband Lloyd and their children: Jason Sanders and wife Becky and Kimberly Schmidt and husband Jay, all of Seymour; great-grandchildren: David and Katie Colgan, Mary and Maggie Colgan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Billy Ray Lewis; brothers: John and Rex Ross; and sisters: Inez Waggoner and Lillian Price.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday from the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor David Colgan and Pastor Deron Colgan officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded at the graveside by members of Gillen Post No. 33.
