John Allen Calkins, 84, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 17, 2022. His beloved family surrounded him.

John is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Colfer Calkins, daughters, Susan Calkins Loth (Bob) and Kelly Calkins Eckhardt (Russell); 5 grandchildren, Shan Marie Egliskis (Matt), Hunter McIntosh (Dawn), Jacob Eckhardt, Abbey Eckhardt and Baileigh Loth Williams (Bruce); three great grandchildren, Mason and Grant Egliskis and Ryann Hill; his cousin, Dwight Calkins (Linda). His only son, John William Calkins; his sister, Jane Calkins Fontenot; and his parents precede him in death.

John was born October 23, 1938 in Dallas, Texas to his parents, Desma Allen and John C. Calkins. John grew up in Houston where he met the love of his life, Mary Colfer Calkins. After graduating St. Thomas Catholic High School in Houston, John attended the University of Texas at Austin. In 1959, John and Mary married and John went to work for the Comptroller of the Currency as an Assistant Bank Examiner and Examiner in Charge of Houston District. In January 1966, John and Mary and their 3 kids (Susan, Johnny and Kelly) moved to Raymondville, Texas where he became an Executive Vice President of Raymondville State Bank. Before his was 30 years old, John was the President of the bank and later was the President/CEO. He was also Chairman of the Board of Raymondville State Bank's successor, First Valley Bank, which later sold to Norwest/Wells Fargo Bank. John served as EVP and a member of the Board of Alamo Bank until his retirement in 2006.

John consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to his Raymondville and Rio Grande Valley communities through his service on various Raymondville and Valley Boards, including Valley Agriculture Research & Development Corporation, Rio Grande Valley Sugar Growers, Inc., Region I Education Service Center, Edinburg, Raymondville Rotary Club, Raymondville Independent School District, St. Anthony's Catholic Church of Raymondville, Raymondville Chamber of Commerce, Willacy County Industrial Foundation and St. Joseph's Academy of Brownsville, where he served in numerous positions from 2004 to 2012. John received the 2009 St. Joseph's Academy award for Outstanding Commitment to Catholic Schools.

John Calkins was beloved by so many, especially his family and many, many life long friends. He was a mentor to many, a loving husband, a wonderful and fantastic Dad, the greatest Papa in the world and a good and true friend. The Good Lord received a great one!

The family will greet friends on Thursday, December 22nd from 1 to 2 P.M. in the St. Mary's Catholic Church, Fredericksburg with a Mass of Resurrection at 2 P.M.
Graveside services and interment will follow in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery
