William was the third of seven children born to George and Nancy Jackson. He worked as a laborer in the coal mines.
He married Rachel Rustay in 1855 and the couple had 11 children: Margaret Ellen, William J., James W., Mary Elizabeth (my great grandmother), Anna Salone, George Washington, Fannie, Edward Thaddeus, Bessie Victoria, and two others who died as infants.
Note: Memorial stone incorrectly lists William's year of birth as 1833, the same year of birth as his brother who was not a twin. Early census records consistently list his age as 15 in 1850, 25 in 1860, and 35 in 1870. The 1900 census lists his birthdate as May 1833.
