In 1955, he moved to California and was a machinist in metal fabrication for about 20 years before retiring in 1978 when he moved to Canby. In about 1939, he married Doris Chapman; they divorced. In 1968, he married Clara Hagen.
Survivors include his wife; sons, John Butler Jr. and Jay Butler; daughter, Joan Holmgren; stepson, Doug Tieg; twelve grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.
