He was employed by Santa Fe Railroad and the Veterans Administration Hospital before he retired. Burnett was a veteran of WWI and a member of Jordan Patterson Post 319 of the American Legion. He served as president of the Topeka Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
Survivors include his wife, Lena Burnett; daughters Mauritanian Davis, Kansas City, Kan.; Maxine Allen, Springfield, Mass, and Marcelo Bass, Riverside, Calif. Surviving sons are Malcolm Burnett, San Francisco, and Marquis Burnett, Topeka. He leaves sisters Rachel Jones and Eunice Bell, Oskaloosa; Ruth Tompkins, Kansas City, Kan.; and Alessandro Conroy, Riverside, Calif.; and brothers Lloyd Burnett and Gifford Burnett, of Oskaloosa.
