Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. An 1839 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he served in the Mexican War, where he received a brevet of Captain for his bravery in the Battle of Cerro Gordo. When the Civil War began he was promoted first to Major of the 19th United States Regular Infantry, then as Lieutenant Colonel of the 15th United States Regular Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services during the war". He retired from the Army as a Colonel in 1870.
