William Harold Tharp, 82, of Clifton, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2008. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Funeral Home.

William Harold was born in Turnersville, Texas, to the late Robert Henry Tharp and Edna Lee Tharp. He was reared on the family farm and attended Turnersville schools. William married Fayrene Cox of Lanes Chapel on June 26, 1943, in Turnersville, and joined Lanes Chapel Methodist Church on Sept. 10, 1944. He served in the U.S. Army from Feb. 27, 1945, to July 26, 1946. He was stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas, Ft. Lewis, Washington, and deployed to the Asiatic Theater of Operations in Hawaii. Mr. Tharp served in the 83rd Quartermaster Depot Company and was acting staff sergeant upon discharge.

After the war, William worked as a truck driver for several companies including Shillings, Southwest Construction, Central Freight and Chemical Lime Plant. He retired from Chemical Lime in 1990, but continued actively working on lawn mower repairs for people in Clifton until last year. He was also an avid gardener sharing his crops with family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Audry; and a niece, Virginia Gayle Bates.

William is survived by his wife of 64 years, Fayrene, of Clifton; son, William Lynn Tharp and wife, Cheryl, of Valley Mills; grandson, Jason William Tharp and wife, Stephanie; great-grandchildren, Elias Joe and Ivy Marie Tharp, all of Mart, and Robert Jeffcoat, of Turnersville.
